Polk State Corporate College in tune with the needs of manufacturers
Their tag line: We Train Polk…!
Innovation, Engagement and Workplace Success = Value
It’s at the heart of their Mission: “The Polk State Corporate College delivers customized corporate solutionsthat enhance workforce skills in the region.”
Whether the Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI), home of Mosaic’s renown apprenticeship program, or Polk Corporate College’s participation in the College Alliance for Advanced Manufacturing (CAAM), our visit of this school could not help but amaze us all. Never standing still, always innovating, always listening to the needs of their manufacturing customers, UPA members and guests had an opportunity to hear and see what’s happening at their campus and across multiple counties in the State.
In describing their various programs, CAAM coordinator Matt Lenihan along with Sam Hale, AMI coordinator gave us a real feel for the highly diverse programs that are offered, each with a strong focus on hands on training often with a mix of on-the-job work and learning on campus. Depending on the program, there are also many opportunities to earn certifications and educational credits in addition to receiving training that leads to higher paying jobs and satisfying careers.
Early on, Polk College along with their manufacturing clients, predicted the major shifts happening in manufacturing as experienced and skilled tradesmen and highly experienced operators are nearing retirement. Filling the pipeline with new talent is a challenge that most companies are facing. “We need to show the new generation of workers that manufacturing offers really cool careers; it’s not the dark, dirty or dangerous jobs of the past,” says Matt.
The fact that we had such a diverse group at this UPA event, listening to the presentations and then taking the tours further added to the richness of our exchanges – a real give and take that speaks to the collaboration that defines UPA. Best of all was having a large group of students able to demonstrate what they’re learning, interacting with the visitors.
Captures the stories of our time together – the learning, sharing and collaborating. Through pictures and brief write-ups, it’s an opportunity to relive tours, events and other activities that you participated in while giving the chance to those who could not attend to experience it virtually.
